Mate & Music Mug
Mate is a traditional beverage shared in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. It is made by soaking dried leaves (yerba) in hot water and is served with a metal straw (bombilla). The container is made from a calabash gourd, hardwoods such as Palo Santo or Lapacho, or from a cattle horn.
It was originally consumed by the Guaraní and Tupi peoples, who were native to Paraguay, northeast of Argentina, and South of Brazil. It was spread across southern South American countries after European colonization. Mate is also popular in Lebanon and Syria, when waves of immigration to Argentina and other South American countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought the traditional drink back to their homeland.
